When Ariana woke up the next morning, she mourned the fact she was alone in her bed. Putting a stop to things with Weston last night had been one of the hardest feats of self-restraint. Harder than turning down chocolate, harder than not begging her celebrity crush for an autograph at the airport last year.

But she couldn’t carry on with Weston, kissing or otherwise, if Victor still believed she wasn’t ready for a relationship. It wasn’t fair to him, and it wasn’t fair to Weston.

Ariana crawled out of her solitary trailer bed and shivered. The cold seeped right through the wool socks she’d gotten from Caitlyn. This certainly was not Fiji.

“Warm beaches, umbrella drinks,” Ariana muttered. “Sunscreen, hot sand, flip flops.” If she pictured the bright blue ocean water hard enough, maybe she wouldn’t see her breath in front of her face when she exhaled.

Her phone buzzed with a notification. She peered at it and rolled her eyes. Calvin, again. He’d left a voicemail. Why wouldn’t he just let up already? She would have to block him, like Weston had suggested. She was ready to put Calvin in her past, where he belonged. Whatever he had to say, whatever half-assed apologies or explanations he could make, they had no place in her life going forward. She was done with Calvin and Joan.

Joan…his sister or cousin or “fated mate.” Weird. Ariana had nearly forgotten about that little phrase she’d overheard. Maybe Calvin and Joan were shifters too, or maybe that was just a term people threw around all the time. There was always some new phrase or another coming up in popularity before fading away just enough that if you used it, you sounded supremely uncool.

Out of habit, Ariana listened to Calvin’s voicemail.

“Ariana, I’m sorry, but listen now I’m worried. I need to know where you are, because I’m in Fiji looking for you. But you never checked in at our hotel, nobody has seen you. Where are you? Do I need to alert authorities? Because I’ll do it, Ariana. This is a matter of life and death.”

Oh, the nerve of this guy.

But she couldn’t abide the idea of him starting a worldwide hunt for her, not when it might bring people to the Junkyard and put the shifters and their secret in danger. That wouldn’t be right.

Taking a deep breath, she opened up the text app and typed out a message.

You treated me like garbage so I took myself to the junkyard, asshole. Don’t contact me again. I’ll find my own fated mate.

There. She poised her finger over the send button, because after this, she was going to block his dirty, cheating butt.

But before she could send the text, her phone rang. Startled, Ariana nearly dropped it.

Because it was Calvin.

This was better. She could speak to him and he could hear her voice and know she wasn’t dying or kidnapped or something ridiculous. And then she would block him.

Sighing, she answered the call. “Hello, Calvin.”

“Ariana, are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I don’t want to talk to you anymore, though.
